Tomatoes at 100rs per kg and govt says inflation is under control, seriously?
Every time you go to buy groceries the bill is higher than last month. Tomatoes crossed Rs 100 per kg. Milk prices went up again. Cooking oil keeps getting costlier. But the govt keeps saying inflation is under control and CPI is within target. Seriously? How does that make any sense? Here is the thing. The govt uses wholesale price index and selective items to calculate inflation. They do not count the actual retail prices you pay at your local shop. The reality is that food inflation has been in double digits multiple times in the last 2 years according to RBI data. But you will never hear that in any press conference. What is crazy is how the govt keeps blaming global factors, supply chain issues, and weather for every price hike. Yes those things matter. But when tomatoes hit Rs 150 per kg that is not just global supply chain. That is also poor domestic planning, hoarding, and lack of cold storage infrastructure. The govt formed a committee to monitor prices but what did it actually do? Prices still went up. The real impact is on middle class families. School fees have doubled in 3 years. Healthcare costs are rising 14 percent yearly. EMIs are higher because of repo rate hikes. Petrol and diesel are still expensive despite crude oil coming down. And your salary? It has not moved at all. The Economic Survey itself admitted that real wage growth has been barely 0.4 percent in 10 years. Think about what that means. In 10 years your salary increased by less than 1 percent in real terms but your expenses have doubled. You are literally poorer now than you were a decade ago even though your salary number looks bigger. The govt keeps announcing schemes and subsidies but those are targeted at BPL families. The middle class gets nothing. No subsidised food, no free healthcare, no education support. You pay taxes on everything. GST on essential items, income tax on your salary, tax on petrol, tax on mutual funds. And what do you get in return? Roads with potholes, govt hospitals with no beds, and schools that charge whatever they want. The govt says CPI is 3 to 4 percent. But when was the last time your monthly expenses only went up by 3 percent? Your grocery bill alone is up 20 to 30 percent. The official numbers do not capture the real cost of living because they use a basket of goods that does not reflect what middle class families actually buy. The govt knows this. The RBI knows this. But nobody wants to admit it because it would mean accepting that their economic policies have failed the middle class. Who is telling the truth, the govt or your grocery bill?
