Paytm fired 5000 people and nobody is talking about it, why?

Paytm laid off over 5,000 employees in one go. 5000 people. That is not a small number. That is 5000 families suddenly worrying about EMIs, rent, school fees, and how to pay next month's bills. And the crazy part? Nobody is really talking about it. Swiggy, Ola, Unacademy, and dozens of other companies have been quietly cutting jobs too. India's tech and startup sector has seen over 35,000 layoffs in 2024 alone. 35,000 people lost their jobs and it barely made the news. The govt keeps announcing job creation schemes and celebrating demographic dividend. What demographic dividend? Our young people cannot find jobs. Companies are cutting jobs to show profitability to investors because funding dried up after the startup boom cooled down. And AI is making it worse. Roles that used to need 10 people now need 3 because AI tools can do the repetitive work. Freshers who spent 4 years studying engineering and paid lakhs in fees are finding no openings. Campus placements at many colleges have dropped 40 to 50 percent. Mid career professionals in their 30s and 40s are being replaced by cheaper talent or automated systems. These are people with home loans, kids in school, parents to support. What are they supposed to do? The govt does not even track private sector layoffs properly. There is no mandatory reporting like in some other countries. So the full scale of the crisis is completely hidden. The unemployment numbers the govt releases do not capture these layoffs because they only count people actively looking for work through official channels. Someone who was laid off from a tech job and is job hunting through LinkedIn does not show up in those statistics. Here is what really bothers me. The same govt that ran campaigns about startup India and digital India is completely silent when those same startups start firing people en masse. They celebrated when these companies were hiring and taking funding. Now that the bubble has burst, nobody wants to talk about it. And the media? Most outlets barely cover layoffs beyond a quick headline. No analysis of why it is happening, what the govt should do, or how these families are surviving. Some people say this is just a private sector issue and the govt should not interfere. But when 35,000 people lose jobs in one year in a single sector, that is not just a private issue. That is an economic crisis that affects spending, tax revenue, and social stability. The govt needs to at least acknowledge the problem, track the data properly, and think about policies to protect workers.
