One hospital stay costs Rs 50,000 and 63 million Indians go bankrupt every year, is healthcare designed to make you poor?
NSS data shows the average cost of a private hospital stay in India is Rs 50,508. In a govt hospital, the same stay costs Rs 6,631. That is an 8x difference. For the exact same treatment. In cities like Mumbai, a single hospitalization can cost over Rs 1.11 lakh. That is more than what most Indians earn in a year. Let that sink in. One hospital visit can cost your entire annual salary. And if you need surgery or long term treatment? You are looking at several lakhs. Despite expanding insurance coverage, out of pocket spending remains 95 percent in rural areas and 83 percent in urban areas. That means even people who have insurance are mostly paying from their own pockets. Why? Because insurance covers so little. The coverage limits are absurd. A Rs 3 lakh family floater policy sounds good until someone needs an MRI, a surgery, and 5 days in the ICU. That Rs 3 lakh is gone in 3 days. And then you are paying everything yourself. WHO says 63 million Indians are pushed into poverty every year due to healthcare costs. 63 million. Every year. That is like the entire population of Italy falling into poverty each year because they got sick. Medical inflation is running at 14 percent, many times general inflation. So next year it will be worse. And the year after that. PMJAY helps BPL families with Rs 5 lakh coverage. That is good for them. But the middle class is stuck. Too rich for govt schemes. Too poor for good insurance. They earn too much to qualify for PMJAY but not enough to afford Rs 50,000 per year for a decent family policy. So what do they do? They dip into savings. They sell gold. They take loans. They borrow from relatives. They liquidate FDs that were supposed to be for their kids education or their retirement. One serious illness and years of savings are gone. I have seen families destroyed by medical bills. A father who saved for 15 years to buy a house loses it all to cancer treatment. A middle class family that was doing well suddenly has nothing because of a heart surgery. And the worst part? The bills are not transparent. You get a piece of paper with 50 items you cannot understand. They charge you for consumables, for room rent, for nursing charges, for doctor visits that may or may not have happened. There is no way to verify. No price transparency. No regulation. Hospitals can charge whatever they want and nobody questions it. The govt talks about Ayushman Bharat and health for all but the middle class gets nothing. No subsidy, no help, no regulation. Just bills. Private hospitals are profit centers. They run tests you do not need. They keep you admitted longer than necessary. They push expensive procedures when cheaper alternatives exist. Because every test, every day, every procedure is revenue. Is India's healthcare system designed to make the middle class poor?
