Delhi ranks among world's most unsafe cities and 98,375 kids went missing in 2024, is law and order slipping?

The NCRB report for 2024 shows overall crime in India dipped 6 percent. The govt celebrates this. But look closer. Cybercrime jumped almost 18 percent with over 1 lakh cases registered. 1 lakh cybercrime cases in one year. And these are just the ones reported. Most cybercrime victims never file a complaint. Delhi ranks among the world's most unsafe cities with a crime index of 59. 59 out of 100. Sitting near the bottom of global safety rankings. This is the national capital. The city where the President lives, where Parliament sits, where the Supreme Court is. And it is one of the most unsafe cities in the world. Mumbai saw a 7 percent rise in total crimes including molestation, sexual harassment and rape. Mumbai. The financial capital. Crime going up. 98,375 children went missing in 2024. A 7.8 percent increase from the previous year. Nearly one lakh children. Gone. Where do they go? Who is looking for them? How many are found? The govt does not tell you this number prominently. Economic offences rose by 4.6 percent. Fraud, cheating, corruption. All up. The govt points to the overall crime dip and says everything is fine. But the categories that matter most to ordinary people are all going up. Cybercrime. Crimes against women. Child safety. These are the crimes that affect daily life. These are the crimes that make you afraid to let your daughter go out, afraid to click a link, afraid to let your child play outside. CCTV cameras and GPS patrolling have helped reduce violent crimes like murder and robbery. That is good. But the new threats are digital and invisible. Someone can empty your bank account from a laptop in another country. Someone can harass your daughter on Instagram from a fake account. Someone can traffic your child through a gaming app. The police are still trained for the old world. They know how to investigate a murder. They do not know how to investigate a cybercrime. They know how to patrol a street. They do not know how to patrol the internet. The govt keeps announcing new schemes and new laws but implementation is weak. Police modernization funds are underutilized. Cyber crime training is minimal. The conviction rate for cybercrimes is abysmal. Most cases drag on for years and end in acquittal. When was the last time you heard of a cybercriminal being convicted quickly? When was the last time you felt the police would actually help if you reported an online fraud? Is law and order quietly slipping under the govt's watch?
