50k rent for a 1BHK in Mumbai, are big cities only for rich people now?

Bro have you seen the rent situation in Mumbai lately? A basic 1BHK in a decent area is Rs 50,000 plus per month. That is more than what most young professionals earn. And the crazy part is nobody is even talking about it. Bengaluru and Delhi are not far behind, rents jumped 30 to 40 percent in just 2 years. If you earn Rs 40,000 a month, you literally cannot get a decent room in these cities anymore. Think about that. You study for years, get a degree, land a job, and then you cannot even afford a roof over your head in the city where you work. What kind of deal is that? People are sharing tiny flats with 3 or 4 strangers, living 2 hours away from office, or just giving up and leaving cities altogether. The govt keeps talking about smart cities and urban development but nobody is fixing the actual housing problem. Landlords raise rents freely because rent control laws do not really work. And here is what really gets me. The same govt that talks about India becoming a 5 trillion dollar economy cannot ensure that a working person can afford a basic place to live. Rents went up 40 percent but salaries barely moved. How does that math work? A young IT worker earning Rs 40,000 in Bengaluru pays Rs 15,000 for a shared room, Rs 5,000 for commute, Rs 8,000 for food, and whatever is left goes to phone bills, internet, and basics. Nothing left to save. And then we wonder why young people are not buying houses or starting families. The real estate market is completely disconnected from reality. Builders keep launching luxury projects that sit empty while ordinary people cannot find affordable housing. In Mumbai alone, over 5 lakh homes are vacant according to census data, but they are all priced way beyond what 90 percent of people can afford. Some people say just move to a smaller city. But jobs are in these big cities. If you want a career in tech, finance, media, or any growing field, you have to be in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, or maybe Hyderabad. You cannot just work remotely from a tier 3 city and expect the same opportunities. The govt needs to step in with actual rent control, affordable housing mandates, and public transport that works so people can live further out without spending 4 hours a day commuting. Right now the only people who can comfortably live in Indian metros are those who already own property or earn above Rs 1 lakh per month. Everyone else is just surviving, not living. Are big cities becoming impossible for normal earning people to live in?
