26 students killed themselves in Kota last year, when will this coaching madness stop?

26 students died by suicide in Kota in a single year. 26 teenagers. Kids who were 15, 16, 17 years old. They came to Kota with dreams of cracking JEE or NEET. Their parents spent lakhs on coaching fees, hostel, and mess. And these kids could not take the pressure anymore so they ended their lives. Let that sink in. Children are dying because of exam pressure and nobody is doing anything about it. Kota is called the coaching capital of India. The coaching industry there is worth thousands of crores. It thrives on the hopes of middle class parents who believe that cracking JEE or NEET is the only path to a good life. But what actually happens in Kota? 16 hour study days. No rest, no breaks, no fun. Constant tests and rankings that make you feel worthless if you are not in the top 200. Students live alone in tiny PG rooms, far from home, with no emotional support. They are 15 or 16 years old, living away from their parents for the first time, and the only thing anyone cares about is their test scores. When they struggle, there is nobody to talk to. The coaching centres do not have counsellors. The hostels do not have wardens who care. The parents are hundreds of miles away and they only call to ask about test results. Is it any wonder that kids break down? The govt has started initiatives like counselling and helplines. But it is all for show. A poster on the wall saying we care about your mental health does not help a 16 year old who is failing every test and feels like their life is over. The Rajasthan govt introduced some regulations like mandatory counselling sessions and suicide prevention measures. But coaching centres just tick the boxes and move on. Nobody is actually checking if these measures work. Here is the ugly truth. These coaching centres are businesses. They make money from every student who enrolls. They do not care if you crack the exam or not. They do not care if you are happy or depressed. They care about the batch strength and the fee collection. The success rate in Kota is less than 5 percent. That means 95 percent of students who go to Kota do not crack JEE or NEET. But the coaching centres never tell you that. They only show you the toppers. They put up hoardings with the faces of the 50 students who got AIR under 1000. They never show you the 26 who died. Or the thousands who went home depressed and broken. The parents also need to wake up. Your child is worth more than a JEE rank. If your kid is stressed, anxious, and unhappy, pulling them out of Kota is not failure, it is parenting. No engineering seat is worth your child's life. The govt needs to regulate this industry properly. Cap the batch sizes. Mandate real mental health support with qualified counsellors. Make coaching centres accountable when students die. Right now, when a student dies, the coaching centre just says it is sad and moves on. No accountability, no investigation, no change. Are these coaching centres just making money off students' dreams and deaths?
